Happy October Grade 3 Community,
Welcome to our first short week. This week we won't be having a memory verse or a Star student. We will be celebrating (Canadian) Thanksgiving! I hope that everyone received the parent letter regarding the Thanksgiving soup we'll be making as a class. I've posted the sign up list on the blog, just in case you or your child forgot which ingredient they sign up for.
I hope you have a wonderful five days off. Enjoy this time as a family to remember all the great things God has given up!
Mrs. Kullman

Hello Parents,
I can't believe September is almost done. What a great start we've had! This week we started centres, which the students seem to be enjoying. It was great to see them working on literacy skills while at the same time having lots of fun working in small groups. We also had a math lesson this week focusing on 1 & 0 multiplication facts. We had a lot of fun multiplying 4 and 5 digit numbers by 1 & 0!
I wanted to let you know about our upcoming field trip to the Reader and Writers Festival of Vancouver. Tickets sold out quickly this year, so we only have space for 4 parents to join us. We'll be going to see Janet Wilson. She speaks about how children can be the voice of change in our world today. The date is October 17 from 8:30-2:00. I'm very excited, as this field trip is always one of my favourites. If you're interested in joining us could you please either write a note in your child's agenda or send me an email (Tickets are $8.50 for parents). I'll call the ticket office this week and see if any more tickets are available, if not I'll do a lottery to see who will be joining us.
Next week we'll be celebrating Thanksgiving in our class by making and eating a special meal together. More information will be sent our this week.
Lastly, I want to encourage to all families to be reading at home with their kids. Grade three is a very important year for reading development, as Grade four work is based on the assumption that most students are reading on grade level. Please take some time this week to hear your child read and also have them hear you read. Happy reading!

Weekly Update: September 17-21
(Sorry forgot to post this last night ;))
Hello Grade Three Parents,
I hope and trust your children are settling into Grade Three well. I feel like it's been longer than two weeks and we've been together as a class for months. It's a good feeling!
Friday was the Terry Fox Run. Before the run we had a discussion and art activity about heroes, and then in the gym we watched an excellent clip about Terry Fox. It was very moving. We also had our first math test on Friday, and yet again your kids blew me away! Everyone in the class has a firm understanding of the concept taught. I'm so excited for this week when we look at skip counting and it's connection to multiplication. To help parents track their child's progression in math I will be stapling a small progress in the planner after taking the test. This sheet not only tells you the score but where your child stands in the relation to the material covered. I hope this helps.
I just wanted to remind you that listening to and having your child read is very important. My expectation is that each student will read at least 30 minutes a day (alone or to another person). This along with other homework is important to helping your child take responsibility for their learning. Thank you for partnering with me in this regard.
Spelling homework starts this week. The concept being taught is short and long vowels, which we've been learning this past week. Please make sure your child returns it on Tuesday.
If you have any questions please feel free to stop by after school. I enjoy meeting you all!

September 10-14: And so it begins!
Hello Grade Three Parents!
Well we all survived last week! What I've noticed about your kids is 1) They're academically right where they need to be (Yeah, Miss O!) 2) They're eager and very motivated to learn. I'm so excited for this year!
A few announcements.

A few announcements.
- HELP Needed: I'm putting together centres for Language Arts and am need of take home menus from local restaurants. If you have any at home that you'd be willing to give away, please send them to school with your child. Thank you so much!
- Home Reading started today. The system I have in place takes a few days (even weeks) to get used to. Please feel free to ask me for clarification if you or your child is confused. The bag your child brought home to day has a booklet for recording books read. Once they're FINISHED a book they record it in the book, you sign it, and it gets sent back to school. This year I'm trying a different rewards system for home reading. We're going to try to read across Canada. Once your child has finished ONE chapter book or TWELVE picture books their name is moved a province on the wall. If they move through out Canada (10 provinces, 3 territories) they will receive a reward. My expectation is that each child is reading at least 30 minutes a day. Reading this year is VERY important. Please partner with me, as we help develop your child's reading abilities.
- The Bible schedule was suppose to be sent home today, but due to the photocopier being out of order it will come home tomorrow. Please note that not every week are your kids expected to memorize for oral dictation. Some weeks they will be doing fill in the blank or unscramble as some of the verses are quite long.
- This Wednesday we'll be doing a summer writing activity. To help the students brainstorm I'm asking them to bring an item or a picture of something they did over the summer break.
This Week:
Bible Verse: Matthew 1:21 (Oral Dictation)
