The Charlottetown Conference Award

We are still working at learning the capital cities of the provinces and territories of Canada.  When your child gets 13/13 they will receive the Charlottetown Conference Award; a certificate of congratulations on their achievement.

The scores students have received thus far have been sent home today. This should give an indication of what needs to be worked on yet.  I also included flashcards the kids can make at home for review.

If you have a computer motivated student, check out these links for computer games you can play at home to help:

1)      www.lizardpoint.com
a.       Test your geography knowledge - Clickable map quizzes
b.      The Americas
c.       Canada

a.       Maps and map puzzles
b.      Canada
c.       Map puzzle

3)      www.geography-map-games.com (good for practicing provinces, but not cities.)
a.       America
b.      Provinces

4)      www.sheppardsoftware.com (is not working on school computers but you can do it at home)
a.       World geography
b.      Canada

We've also been using this chant.  Good luck!

The Little Mermaid

All of the students in Grade 2/3 will be involved in The Little Mermaid by participating in the Sea Chorus; the choir which accompanies the whole show!  To help the students organize the many handouts they will be receiving I've sent home a manila envelope that we can add to as the weeks go on.  It would be helpful to have the envelope at school on Tuesdays and Thursdays for music, but I am not requiring it because it would be MORE helpful if the music gets practiced at home and doesn't get lost! Thanks!

An All Expenses Paid Trip!

The students will be embarking on a (pretend) all expenses paid trip to their assigned province or territory! They will have as much money as they need to do and see whatever they would like to while there. The only catch is that they will need to write a descriptive paragraph about their destination when they get back.

The learning target is to "gather information from a variety of resources."  The students used books and the internet today to create a list of things they would like to do or see while on their trip.  This list will turn into a paragraph which will become part of a presentation in the weeks to come; more information coming soon!

Last week in February

Wow, we are ending our second month of 2014!  Where as it gone?  Well I hope it has been a good year so far.  We had an exciting week this past week with lots of Olympic activities happening at the school.  Hope you enjoy the last couple of days of the Sochi Olympics.

I want to encourage each family to make sure their child is reading at home.  Reading can be on their own or with another person.  I realize family life is very busy at times and it is hard to fit more things into our schedule.  However, it is expected that students are doing homework each night.  My policy is to that students should be spending 10 mins/grade level.  So grade 2s should be spending 20 minutes and grade 3s should be spending 30 mins.  This time should be used for reading/practicing math facts/practicing spelling.  Each week students are required to write misspelled words in their agenda. Students should be practicing these words.  If you want assistance what your child can do, please come and see me.  I do assign homework once in awhile if students are not keeping up and/or if the assignment requires information that comes from home.  When homework does come home, I do not expect that it is above their regular practice homework time.

Overview of the Week:
Monday Feb. 24, 2014
- Spelling Homework - due Friday
- PE (first thing in the morning)
Tuesday Feb. 25, 2014

This week in Social Studies...

This week in Social Studies we self-evaluated our play-dough maps.  The learning target for the assignment was to "identify the physical features of the provinces and territories of Canada", so we looked critically at our maps to see if someone looking at our map would be able to do that.  We made additions to our legends and colouring schemes and now I'll have a look at them all and see how we're doing in regards to this learning target.

Also in Social Studies, we are continuing to work on the capital cities of Canada.  We will have a quiz weekly until we all get to 100%.  We are doing different review activities in class but feel free to look for your own creative activities at home; online computer games, flashcards, find your old school atlas and find the map of Canada... I will post student progress in their agendas on Thursday.
