Merry Christmas!
Nine more days until Christmas! This is our last week before the break, and a busy one at that! Wednesday is the last day for Food Bank donations. Our class is really wanting to win the pizza party... if you can, please help us by donating a non-perishable item or two. Thanks!
If I don't get a chance to see you this week, have a wonderful Christmas break.

Hi Parents,
We'll the Christmas season is in full swing here at school! I'll do my best to give you prior notice about upcoming special events or things happening around the school. My apologizes if I miss something!
Over the past week we've had some playground issues arise, which is very typical for this time of year and also for their social development. In Grade Three, kids are becoming more aware of social rules. They begin to see that not everything is black and white in the world, and yet at the same time they long for justice and fairness. I will do my best to deal with these issues as they arise. I would also employ you to talk with your child as well. I always find it quite helpful to talk about my own experience in Elementary school. Times when my friends and I didn't always get along or when I had to apologize for something I did or said. Thank you for your partnership on this matter!
The Christmas Concert is this Tuesday, and we're all VERY excited about it! Performances will be at 1:30 and 6:00 pm. Students need to be in their FULL Winter uniform. The Grade Three class will be in the Elementary choir and some of our students will be reading selected bible verses. I've sent the verses home on Friday to be practiced over the weekend. THEY DO NOT HAVE TO MEMORIZE THEM.
BOYS: Tie, black shoes, grey pants, white shirt, and sweater

Weekly Update: November 26-30
Hi Grade Three Community,
Thank you to all who were able to make it out to the Primary Open house. It was so great to give you a glimpse into our Primary program here at WRCA.
This Friday report cards will be going home. I'm going to a chat with the class about what report card mean and what those little numbers say about their work. What I always stress to the students is that I write report cards for you the parents, but also for the students to understand how their doing and areas of improvement. That being said, I would love to hear that every student was able to sit down with their parents and discuss their report card. Another thing I stress with the kids is what the numbers mean. Here's a breakdown of what the numbers mean:

Here's a breakdown of what the numbers mean:
- Not yet within expectations: Student needs help as they are not understanding the subject or are unable to perform this specific task.
- Minimally meets expectations: Student is beginning to develop this skill or knowledge. They are still developing and more practise is needed.
- Fully meets expectation: Student is at grade level! They know the knowledge or are able to perform that specific task. BE VERY PROUD!
- Exceeds Expectations: This is your child's gifting. A four means they are above grade level, so it's very rare.
I hope this helps start the conversation.
Upcoming events:
- Dec. 12th: Whole School Christmas Concert! Two performances will take place that day. A matinee and an evening performance. Tickets will be available soon (these are free of charge).
- Dec. 19th: Christmas Craft day! Email to interested parents will be sent this week.
- Dec. 21st: K-12 Buddy Skate at Langley Twin Rinks. All are welcome!
- Dec. 21-January 6th: Christmas Break. Rest, relax, and have some great family moments!

Hello Parents,
I hope and trust you had a wonderful long weekend with your kids! Just a reminder that Photo Retakes are this Thursday. Also, we're very excited to invite you to a special performance Friday afternoon at 2:00. We will be performing four different short plays. The kindergarten and grade one class will also be coming. We'll see you there!
Next week is end of term. I will be sending home any unfinished work this week, as I need it to be completed and returned so I can mark it before end of term. Thanks!
Lastly, I would love to do something for Christmas with the students, like a craft or baking day (or both...). That being said, I would LOVE parent involvement. I had mentioned to the kids that might be fun to bake cookies for a Homeless shelter I know of in Surrey, as well as make an decoration or two. If any parents out there love this kind of stuff, please email and we can begin to plan.
Have a great week,
Mrs. Kullman

Hello Parents!
I hope you're doing well! Not much to report about this week. In Language Arts we'll be focusing on War and Peace, as we prepare for Remembrance day. Today in Math I introduce the students to the concept of unknown values (2xR=18). For many this type of question is quite confusing, so I might be sending home some homework to reinforce the idea. The homework would be sent home Wednesday, if need be. Next week the students won't have a new verse, but rather if they've missed one they can redo it next week. I'll send a note home next Monday with your child's missed verses. Please take time to have them catch-up. My goal every year is to have every student complete the verses for the Bible Memory award.
Thanks and have a great week!

Weekly Update: October 29th- November 1st
Hi Parents!
Well the rain season has begun! Thank you for sending your child to school in proper outdoor attire, as we've had a few rainy outdoor recess. Please note as well that as of Thursday, November 1st, the winter uniform will need to be wore everyday.
This Wednesday is Dressfest! Your child is to come to school with their costume, either on or with them. If your child's costume is large or restricts their movement, please make sure they have other clothes to wear, as we do have work to get done that day and well as an afternoon of games to participate in. Wednesday afternoon we'll be having a games party. If you have a great board game at home your child would like to bring, please send it to school on Wednesday (or Tuesday and I'll store it for them). I usually ask students to bring a snack to share, and we always have WAY too much food, so this year I'm only asking half the class to bring something to share. And because we have an almost even gender split, this time the girls will be bring something to share. Half the girls will be bring a fruit or vegetable snack while the other half have signed up for a non-fruit/vegetable snack. Please be aware that our classroom is a non-peanut zone, so please read the ingredients carefully! Thank you!
Have a great week!

Weekly Update Oct 22-26th
Hello Parents,
I just wanted to start out by thanking for all those parents I had the privilege of meeting with on Thursday night. It was so great to share with you what we've been up to in grade three. You all have very special kids, and I love spending my days with them!
Wednesday's field trip to Granville Island was a huge success! I had the students write about this experience the next day. Here are some the their favourite moments;
"I liked when Janet Wilson said that kids can do anything adults can do."
"My favourite part of the day was playing in the park."
"I liked when Janet Wilson brought kids from her book up on stage. The boy who raised money for Japan was awesome."
What I loved about Janet Wilson was that she got our kids excited about helping make a difference in our communities and the world. I've attached some links to videos from her book. Please a take a moment to check out these amazing kids who are actively trying to make a better future for our kids!

Weekly Update: October 15-19th
Hi Parents,
Well the rain season seems to be upon us... Please make sure your child comes to school ready for the weather. This year we will try to send the kids outside at least once a day, that is if it's not pouring down buckets. When it's gym days, they could always wear their uniforms and I can have them change, or else investing in some track pants might be a good idea. I forgot to mention it in my blog the other week, but due to uniform shortages with our supplier, Spring/Fall uniform has been extended until the end of this month. That being said, if you have the winter uniform and your child is warmer wearing it, please feel free to send them to school in it. Thanks!
This Wednesday is our field trip! The weather channel is showing that Wednesday will be a rainy day, if that's the case, we'll move our picnic indoors to the food market on Granville Island. Students are to wear their uniforms on the field trip. Thank you to all those parents that showed interest in helping out with the field trip. For those that weren't able to help this time, don't worry we'll be going other places this year and will need your help then!
Parent/Teacher interviews are this Thursday. Please feel free to sign up for a space either before or after school this week. Interviews start at 2:15 and go until 8:30pm. Also, please note that Thursday will be an early dismissal for all students. Kids will be dismissed at 2:10. I look forward to meeting with all of you!
Thanks,
Mrs. Kullman

Hello Parents!
I hope and trust you had a great Thanksgiving long weekend with your families! I know I did.
Today your child was given a permission sheet regarding our upcoming trip to the Readers and Writers Festival on Granville Island. I'm still in need of parent helpers, as we are needing to take parent vehicles as our transportation. We currently have three parents volunteering and will be needing at least two or three more to help transport all students. If you're interested, could you please email me ASAP at kullmanm@wrca.bc.ca. Thanks!
Last week we as a class had a very interesting conversation about homelessness and how to help those that struggle with poverty. One thing that kept coming up in the conversation was how as Christians can we help in a way that is life-giving and positive. Over the weekend I was contacted by a organization that helps women exit homelessness and exploitation, as they're having their annual Bowl-athon (which I've participated in for the last couple years) in November and have asked me to put together a team. My hope/thought is to make the team(s) up of people from our class. The date is November 3rd and if you and your family are interested all you have to do is get some sponsors and then come to Xcaliber Bowling Centre for some fun and with the knowledge that we are helping an organization who does great things for those that are hurting and are in need. The organization's name is Servants Anonymous Society (sasurrey.ca). They're based here in Surrey, and is lead by an amazing women of God who longs to help women in the lower mainland receive healing and help. Please let me know if you're interested!
Have an amazing week!

Social Studies Homework
Hello Parents,
I just wanted to quickly explain the Social Studies homework to you. We've been working on mapping the last couples of weeks, so this activity is to help develop your child's mapping skills. What I've asked of them is to use the grid I gave them to create a map of their room. They are to be detailed as possible and to label the objects they draw on their map.
This assignment is due NEXT TUESDAY (October 9th).
Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. Thanks!
Mrs. Kullman

I've posted the sign up list on the blog, just in case you or your child forgot which ingredient they sign up for.
I hope you have a wonderful five days off. Enjoy this time as a family to remember all the great things God has given up!

September 24-28
Hello Parents,
I can't believe September is almost done. What a great start we've had! This week we started centres, which the students seem to be enjoying. It was great to see them working on literacy skills while at the same time having lots of fun working in small groups. We also had a math lesson this week focusing on 1 & 0 multiplication facts. We had a lot of fun multiplying 4 and 5 digit numbers by 1 & 0!
I wanted to let you know about our upcoming field trip to the Reader and Writers Festival of Vancouver. Tickets sold out quickly this year, so we only have space for 4 parents to join us. We'll be going to see Janet Wilson. She speaks about how children can be the voice of change in our world today. The date is October 17 from 8:30-2:00. I'm very excited, as this field trip is always one of my favourites. If you're interested in joining us could you please either write a note in your child's agenda or send me an email (Tickets are $8.50 for parents). I'll call the ticket office this week and see if any more tickets are available, if not I'll do a lottery to see who will be joining us.
Next week we'll be celebrating Thanksgiving in our class by making and eating a special meal together. More information will be sent our this week.
Lastly, I want to encourage to all families to be reading at home with their kids. Grade three is a very important year for reading development, as Grade four work is based on the assumption that most students are reading on grade level. Please take some time this week to hear your child read and also have them hear you read. Happy reading!

Weekly Update: September 17-21
(Sorry forgot to post this last night ;))
Hello Grade Three Parents,
I hope and trust your children are settling into Grade Three well. I feel like it's been longer than two weeks and we've been together as a class for months. It's a good feeling!
Friday was the Terry Fox Run. Before the run we had a discussion and art activity about heroes, and then in the gym we watched an excellent clip about Terry Fox. It was very moving. We also had our first math test on Friday, and yet again your kids blew me away! Everyone in the class has a firm understanding of the concept taught. I'm so excited for this week when we look at skip counting and it's connection to multiplication. To help parents track their child's progression in math I will be stapling a small progress in the planner after taking the test. This sheet not only tells you the score but where your child stands in the relation to the material covered. I hope this helps.
I just wanted to remind you that listening to and having your child read is very important. My expectation is that each student will read at least 30 minutes a day (alone or to another person). This along with other homework is important to helping your child take responsibility for their learning. Thank you for partnering with me in this regard.
Spelling homework starts this week. The concept being taught is short and long vowels, which we've been learning this past week. Please make sure your child returns it on Tuesday.
If you have any questions please feel free to stop by after school. I enjoy meeting you all!

September 10-14: And so it begins!
Hello Grade Three Parents!
Well we all survived last week! What I've noticed about your kids is 1) They're academically right where they need to be (Yeah, Miss O!) 2) They're eager and very motivated to learn. I'm so excited for this year!
A few announcements.

A few announcements.
- HELP Needed: I'm putting together centres for Language Arts and am need of take home menus from local restaurants. If you have any at home that you'd be willing to give away, please send them to school with your child. Thank you so much!
- Home Reading started today. The system I have in place takes a few days (even weeks) to get used to. Please feel free to ask me for clarification if you or your child is confused. The bag your child brought home to day has a booklet for recording books read. Once they're FINISHED a book they record it in the book, you sign it, and it gets sent back to school. This year I'm trying a different rewards system for home reading. We're going to try to read across Canada. Once your child has finished ONE chapter book or TWELVE picture books their name is moved a province on the wall. If they move through out Canada (10 provinces, 3 territories) they will receive a reward. My expectation is that each child is reading at least 30 minutes a day. Reading this year is VERY important. Please partner with me, as we help develop your child's reading abilities.
- The Bible schedule was suppose to be sent home today, but due to the photocopier being out of order it will come home tomorrow. Please note that not every week are your kids expected to memorize for oral dictation. Some weeks they will be doing fill in the blank or unscramble as some of the verses are quite long.
- This Wednesday we'll be doing a summer writing activity. To help the students brainstorm I'm asking them to bring an item or a picture of something they did over the summer break.
This Week:
Bible Verse: Matthew 1:21 (Oral Dictation)
