Weekly Update: October 28- November 1

Hi parents!

A few reminders from last week's blog.

Operation Christmas Child:
As a class we will be filling 5 boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Each desk group choose a gender and age to buy for. The students brainstormed some items to go in their box and each child signed up for buy one or two small items to purchase. I will be sending the list home Wednesday. Our goal is to have all items purchased and brought to school by Nov. 4th. If this is a problem please feel free to either email me or chat with me after school.

Book Reports: October 30
Next Wednesday book reports are due. If you could please have your child hand in their book report along with the book log on Wednesday that would be great. I would love to have a chance to see what they're reading. I'm not so worried about how much, rather I just want to encourage books that they are reading quality, skill appropriate books.

Dressfest: Thursday October 31
Next Thursday is DressFest! Please remember that these costumes are to be fun. Scary or prejudice costumes are not allowed. We will be having a class board game party in the afternoon. Only half the class will be asked to bring snacks, and of those another half will bring veggies/fruit and junk.

Mrs. Kullman's Parental Leave letter

Dear Parents,

This Fall has been one of my favourites!  Your children are so kind and empathic, and working with them has been absolutely wonderful. However, it is with equal parts sadness and excitement that my husband and I have had to make a decision for our children.

In September, Geoff and I found out that, because of new legislation surrounding the adoption process, we are eligible for 9 months of parental leave immediately. We debated what to do, and had decided to release the decision to God. At the beginning of October, things at home were becoming more difficult with Cameron craving my presence, and the adoption process demanding more of our time. During my drive home one afternoon, I had a thought that gave me peace, so I know it was from God. That thought was that these boys were placed with us for a reason and that I need to be there for them right now. As you can image, while this thought gave me a sense of peace, I love teaching and love your kids, so making this decision has been incredibly difficult.

However, our decision has now been made, and it is to do what is best for our family right now.  So starting in January 2014 I will be switching my focus to my kids instead of yours. I will treasure these next two months with your kids (as well as with you, too).

Please note: I have NOT yet told your children, but will be telling them tomorrow (Tuesday, October 29th).  I would very much like the opportunity to tell them myself instead of hearing it from you, their parents, first.  I appreciate your help in this, as I know it may be difficult to keep this "mum" (pun intended).

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to come talk to me after class or email me at any time.  In regards to who will be teaching your children for the remainder of the school year, rest assured that the Administration team is in the process of finding the best candidate to fill the role.

Sincerely,

Melissa Kullman

Weekly Update: October 14-18

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope you had a wonderful LONG weekend. You're children looked refreshed this morning. I have a number of things to make you aware of.

Field Trip: NEXT Tuesday (October 22) we'll be travelling with the Grade 1/2 class to Granville Island to see two authors (Ashely Spires & Anne Barrows) speak about the writing process. The performance begins at 10 am, and as we all know morning traffic is quite busy, so we'll be leaving at 8:00 AM sharp. If you could have your child to school by 7:50 AM that would be wonderful. If this is a problem, could you please email me so we can find a solution. Students are to wear their Uniforms, bring a garbage free lunch for us to eat at the park, and if they own any of the books written by the authors they may bring them to have signed. Lastly, I'm looking for 4-5 drivers that are available to spend the whole day with us. If you're interested could you please fill out the permission form with the ticket money (parent tickets cost $8.50).

Winter Uniforms: I was so glad to see many students arrive to school in their Winter uniform. To clarify WRCA sweaters and sweatshirts are the only sweaters to be wore in class. Boots are acceptable as well.

Weekly Update: October 7-11th

Happy Thanksgiving week!

Sweaters for Syria: My church is collecting gently used sweaters for Syria. I've challenged the students to look in their closets and see if there's a sweater that they don't wear often that they could donate to kids in Syria. We're just collecting Tuesday and Wednesday. Thanks for your participation!

Thanksgiving Soup: The soup we're making on Wednesday will be sufficient enough for students not to bring a lunch. I will be providing crackers and a dessert to add to the meal. Let me know if you have any questions.

Mrs. Kullman
