Weekly Update: Sept 30- Oct 4

Hi Parents,

Welcome to the end of our first month together!

Today I had the students write in their journals about our first month together. It was interesting to see what stood out in their minds. Many mentioned our lessons on the brain, while others commented on our use of learning targets.

Speaking of which, I wanted to take a moment to tell you about the practice of learning targets. As a staff, Mr. Deboer has been leading us through a series of lessons on the best practice of Learning Targets. Simply put Learning Targets are the purpose or the 'why' of a lesson. Typically, as teacher, we plan lessons with fun activities or thoughtful discussion, but we often forget to let our audience, the students, know what it is we want them to get from the lesson. Learning Targets tell the student what it is they will be learning/doing/achieving in a certain lesson or activity. They can be as simple as 'I can interview my parent' to something more complex and needing more teaching time such as 'I can use value colour in my art piece.' I'd love for to you to start asking your child what Learning Targets we've been focusing on in class!

Also, I wanted to remind you that your child's library books are checked out for three weeks. Please don't feel you have to rush through a book just to bring it back on Friday.

Weekly Update Sept 23-27

Hello Parents,

Today we had a great conversation about personal goals. Each student had to think of two goals they would like to work on this year. After brainstorming two, they then had to answer a few questions regarding their goals. One question, was who would help support you. Many students said you their parent would help them, so I will be sending home a photocopy of their journals tomorrow. If you could please occasionally check in with your child to see what support you (or even myself) can offer them.

This Friday morning we'll be participating in a buddy activity where we will be welcoming the Cops for Cancer cyclists. If you're able to, we're asking for a $2.00 donation which will 'buy' your child out of wearing their uniform for the day.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Kullman

Weekly Update: September 16-20

Happy Third week!

I always find that it's during this week that things really start 'clicking' for students. It's the week routines become natural, learning begins to really happen, and the class community begins to take shape.

Today we had a great day. You children completed their first piece of good copy writing. We're already on to lesson 3 in math, and we began brainstorming goal for this term. Please remember to spend time helping your child complete the spelling homework. Also, please remind them about their 'challenge' of the day!

Please let me know if you have any questions,

Mrs. Kullman

Weekly Update: September 9-13th

Welcome to the Grade 2/3 blog!

This week has been awesome getting to know you're kids. They are a terrific bunch. This week we've spent time getting to know each other, organizing our learning environment, and participating in fun lessons about our brain. The aim of these brain lessons is so that students begin to understand how their beautifully crafted mind works, which will help them develop successful strategies for learning both in the classroom and out on the field.

Next week we will begin our Math, Spelling, Science, and Social Studies units. I'm currently doing reading comprehension tests on all students to better understand how to move forward with Language Arts.

This coming Friday we will be participating in a Terry Fox run. We'd love for parents to join us. We will be meeting as an Elementary at 1:30 (location to be announced), where we will watch a short clip and then going for a kilometre run.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Kullman

A few notes

Just a few notes:

Agendas: Please sign your child’s agenda each day, as all important information will be communicated through it. The planner is also a great way of sending me notes as I check it every morning.

Blog: We have a class blog! (www.wrcagrade3.blogspot.com). The blog will have up-to-date information regarding field trips, activities, and the schedule for the current and upcoming week. For those parents that indicated they would like to receive notices via email/blog this is where you will find notices.

Food/Water: Students are allowed one water bottle at their desk, which they can drink at any time during the day. I also allow students to snack on vegetables and fruit during the course of the day. Students have been made aware of this and the expectation of behaviour that surrounds such a privilege. Items such as fruit cups, apple sauce, and fruit leather are considered acceptable veggies or fruits.

Supplies: (Grade 2 Parents) I realized today as students were unpacking their school supplies that Grade 2 parents had purchased supplies from the Grade 2 list (of course you did!). I apologize for any anxiety this might have caused your child. If you are able to purchase a few extra items that would be great! If this is a problem please let me know. Please take your time, as I have extras in the classroom for each child to use.
·      Items for Grade 2s to purchase
o   Markers
o   Pencil crayons
o   Crayons
o   White eraser
o   Glue stick

Peanut Allergy: Peanuts and nut-based product cannot be consumed at school. We have an allergy to nuts in our class, and for the respect of the student I would ask that you only pack non-nut food products. Please be aware of this with respect to student birthday treats and other sharing of food.

PE: Physical Education starts this Friday. Please send your child to school in their WRCA PE strip.

Scholastic: We will be participating in Scholastic this coming year. When ordering please ensure that you send a cheque for the full amount, cash will not be accepted. The first Scholastic order will be due NEXT Friday (September 13th). Order forms will be sent home tomorrow.

Spelling: Because the first week is so busy, we won’t start spelling until next week. Please look for their first spelling assignment Tuesday evening.

Email: My school email is kullmanm@wrca.bc.ca. I will check my email everyday after school and periodically throughout the day. Please make sure you fill out and return the parent communication sheet. This ensures I'm sending emails to the correct address.

Today was great, and I’m very excited for this year!
