Weekly Update: Dec. 2-5th

Merry Christmas Season!

Lots going on these days. I'm trying my best to post everything on the blog and/or in your child's planner. If I've forgotten about something you know happening in our community, please let me know. Thanks!

We had a great conversation on Friday about Matthew and Luke's accounts of Jesus' birth. We examined both passages for similarities and differences, and then talked about the why the differences exist. It was a power conversation where many light bulbs went off for the students. I think many times our kids grow up around the Bible, and treat it as if it's a whole book. Where as we know it was written throughout many years, for different audiences. That's where light bulbs went off. The class realized that Matthew and Luke had two different audiences, and that each writing was helping their intended audience see that Jesus was sent for them...for all us!

It's that time of year...report cards come out on Friday. I want to take a moment to remind you how to read your child's report card. The system we currently use in BC is a 1-4 scale. Each subject is broken down into specific statements (e.g. Can skip count forwards and backwards by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 10s), and then each of these statements are given a numerical mark.

Here's a breakdown of what the numbers mean:

1-Not yet within expectations
Kids speak: What? I have no idea what we're studying...

2- Minimally meeting expectations
Kids speak: I'm working on it. I might need to spend some extra time reviewing this concept

3-Meeting expectation
Kids speak: I'm right where I should be for my grade.

4-Exceeding expectation
Kids speak: This is the thing I'm really good at. It's my God-given talent!
